I'm very proud of it but the project was probably too ambitious. I didn't have enough time, money, energy or experience to make the film I really wanted to make. Perhaps every artist feels this way when a project is complete but I think enough time has passed now for a fair and honest evaluation. I poured everything I had into this but the rendering technique was too labour intensive. It was exhausting. I wanted to create an immersive and cathartic west coast experience- a living painting. I wanted to transport a viewer to this rugged environment in the middle of a winter storm. In the end, I simply ran out of gas. There are moments that really work but overall, the film falls a little flat. Live and learn. No regrets.</div><div> </div><div></div><div>While I certainly hope to direct more films, I won't take on a project of this scope again. Even if I had the energy and resources, it wouldn't make sense to create something like this today. The world doesn't have much patience for this sort of filmmaking anyway and computers have probably rendered this approach obsolete. To me, this film is an odd but interesting time capsule both in my life and in the world of film making and animation. </div>Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-54411769861647747732009-06-28T10:43:00.001-07:002009-06-30T10:00:40.673-07:00Stephen McCallum Animation/IllustrationA Little Slideshow..... <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left; WIDTH: 425px" id="__ss_1646079"><a style="MARGIN: 12px 0px 3px; DISPLAY: block; FONT: 14px Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; TEXT-DECORATION: underline" title="Stephen McCallum Animation/Illustration" href="http://www.slideshare.net/sbmccallum/satephen-mccallum-animationillustration?type=presentation">Stephen McCallum Animation/Illustration</a><object style="MARGIN: 0px" width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=fullslideshow-090626152611-phpapp01&stripped_title=satephen-mccallum-animationillustration"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://static.slidesharecdn.com/swf/ssplayer2.swf?doc=fullslideshow-090626152611-phpapp01&stripped_title=satephen-mccallum-animationillustration" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="355"></embed></object><div style="FONT-FAMILY: tahoma, arial; HEIGHT: 26px; FONT-SIZE: 11px; PADDING-TOP: 2px">View more <a style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://www.slideshare.net/">documents</a> from <a style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline" href="http://www.slideshare.net/sbmccallum">Stephen Mccallum</a>.</div></div>Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-90751847025008595942009-04-17T19:43:00.001-07:002009-04-20T13:05:20.820-07:00The StudioLife as a Freelance Artist<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRsKvXQgTVqv9CAlevTVK6AHWcjbGpglCSZUHxMrVKeonrj2zQos7BooJP4R9dnhdql0CHEQj672XSXD1QGas8hCDyWozY-bJsn88sqFth_dDzzS9RJpwp7Fc8j98oj7KxD1gasepehbQN/s1600-h/My+Studio.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325856973020215458" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRsKvXQgTVqv9CAlevTVK6AHWcjbGpglCSZUHxMrVKeonrj2zQos7BooJP4R9dnhdql0CHEQj672XSXD1QGas8hCDyWozY-bJsn88sqFth_dDzzS9RJpwp7Fc8j98oj7KxD1gasepehbQN/s320/My+Studio.jpg" /></a><br /><br />I began working from home 6 years ago when Disney Interactive closed the Victoria studio. Some of the folks who worked at Disney went across the pond to work at various studios in Vancouver. Others set up new studios here in Victoria or found jobs with the government. I decided to go freelance. For the most part, it's been a positive experience. I've taken on a variety of interesting projects and worked with some terrific people along the way. There are times when I lay awake wondering where the next job will come from but I always seem to find something. I manage. I feel fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the world. My schedule is flexible and this lifestyle allows me time to explore and develop my personal work. I feel healthier now that I'm out of the studio system. I walk every day beside the ocean. I play hockey 2 or 3 times a week and I swim regularly at the local Y. As a freelancer, I receive no benefits, no holidays and no pension so I gotta stay healthy -I have to keep working! I'm not complaining. I would be bored silly if I didn't work. Life is good!Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-24867428040462166632009-04-03T22:03:00.000-07:002009-04-04T15:04:50.050-07:00Flash Animation for Children's E-Learning Title<p></p><p></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;">Grade 4 Math </span></p><p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwew7ZMUjJIO9-8960HtA7vYhoIRZBdOU_WoOXylKQahNxSsN24AuYHUS2eJH-LmB-j-dXcZoxLzZEt89a4gQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></p><p>I've created dozens of these 3 minute Flash cartoons for <em>Etraffic Solutions</em>-a local developer. Editions have also been published in the US, Japan and Germany.</div><div></div>Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-29325422435481122872009-03-15T10:39:00.000-07:002009-03-15T14:56:33.638-07:00Character Animation-Walk Cycle<p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwNeslCcvvleBfvyIj07D9lJtC97aLHZnlktoiWrF1vHKECjUsxfWtDdHkNvGR_lzJ6-5Ow1oKdwIXdvPlh3Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></p><p>Whenever I have a break between paid assignments I like to hone my skills and explore new styles and techniques. Here is a walk cycle I created recently in Flash. I wanted to find out long it might take to draw a sequence of animation in this style then scan it, trace it and colour it in Flash. This particular sequence of 20 drawings took about a week from concept to completion. </p><p>One day, I'd like to make a little film based on this character. The story might be a "Chaplinesque" morality play for our modern economic woes. Of course, I'll have to dig up some funding to make that happen. We'll see!</p>Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-40660657654895420782009-03-14T13:22:00.001-07:002009-03-15T14:57:49.130-07:00Children's Book Illustration-Interior B&Ws<span style="font-size:130%;"><em></em></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><em>Daughter of Light</em></span><br /><em><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></em><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Orca Books 2001</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Written by Martha Attema</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">B&W Pencil drawings </span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnv05R1k8Hbg6hup6u8JrNvnAABOx2S-O4KErJutOt_5R-0kdJajZn_pgXTWkeQLPpXHbqzurU90ESU3M3usLf7JF9mF4ervwcRI4IJX9bds9pOTdDXlWQk3R7gtwSxB_b0IiealkkxI3U/s1600-h/Daughter+of+Light+3.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 132px; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313142715749812386" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnv05R1k8Hbg6hup6u8JrNvnAABOx2S-O4KErJutOt_5R-0kdJajZn_pgXTWkeQLPpXHbqzurU90ESU3M3usLf7JF9mF4ervwcRI4IJX9bds9pOTdDXlWQk3R7gtwSxB_b0IiealkkxI3U/s200/Daughter+of+Light+3.jpg" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTXtR9Dq188S6kb6yhratMGjUPQO03OkKm96Tubs_X9jY-Q5gedZAPkSXTUshLiH4FDva-JZFO891BPpAzOf5NIrnXOnKkKmGbnUndBDslfRbKA_4eZsznC9WvfB9t2b0S8zy9B3cr7neu/s1600-h/Daughter+of+Light+2.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 132px; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313142706047203186" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTXtR9Dq188S6kb6yhratMGjUPQO03OkKm96Tubs_X9jY-Q5gedZAPkSXTUshLiH4FDva-JZFO891BPpAzOf5NIrnXOnKkKmGbnUndBDslfRbKA_4eZsznC9WvfB9t2b0S8zy9B3cr7neu/s200/Daughter+of+Light+2.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI57pENwJDOfbr0AECb8mBtqKdaVNebgRIU7EnoLLUj4PvvUVKI14jJVMrQjoS4bEnXFsRtEEnR0JoPZjPtuVZhMjl1ivixdPk_0L2b6XD61olfvkO66zNSN116NK6JUVQHtBMyxwtfHxN/s1600-h/Daughter+of+Light+1.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 132px; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313142705566864450" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI57pENwJDOfbr0AECb8mBtqKdaVNebgRIU7EnoLLUj4PvvUVKI14jJVMrQjoS4bEnXFsRtEEnR0JoPZjPtuVZhMjl1ivixdPk_0L2b6XD61olfvkO66zNSN116NK6JUVQHtBMyxwtfHxN/s200/Daughter+of+Light+1.jpg" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SDjPbdT24JI/Sbxrp9TKrPI/AAAAAAAAAEI/8iBqapIt7ag/s1600-h/Daughter+of+Light+4.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 132px; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313240028964105458" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SDjPbdT24JI/Sbxrp9TKrPI/AAAAAAAAAEI/8iBqapIt7ag/s200/Daughter+of+Light+4.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSMDqKRhpOO7AjloK1WB9Uf5-FgY2ffPMJs2O1Zh_JrdxPF6Vtu9hmmjI6sToRUXAiWmOa4DGpDZ_1KTyNTOn6cUiQ90v1ugJsezVkg5CVpCoKsE8U6j_1AVHORDPZTh-ORr9e7LCOoYo4/s1600-h/Bear+Canyon+3.jpg"></a>4 examples of interior illustrations for young reader fiction. I've illustrated 6 of these books including the covers. Generally, these interior "sketches" take about 4-5 hours including research. Every book, especially historical books with realistic figures requires quite a bit of digging around for good reference material. Everything including, clothing, landscapes and architecture needs to be acurate and I'm always on the lookout for interesting details to include in these images. </div></div>Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-33228573803816318452009-03-14T11:19:00.000-07:002009-03-15T14:58:35.860-07:00Children's Book Illustration-A Dog for a Friend<span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Orca Books 1992<br /></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Written by Marily Reynolds<br /></span><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSyPYzNt7dduNTIwMIRtAu3dZ6mN6Q1Dr5MUTGTj2rkqTw6SaiPL77J4tyzr3xvaXlMmyLqSqcVoIaFJhf7QRdZYUTVSW6MBvZ4btGRGInomMPnr9pLldV2r32uVR5aMfyKrIEuNYxdqe9/s1600-h/DogCU.gif"><img style="WIDTH: 233px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313110806640040722" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSyPYzNt7dduNTIwMIRtAu3dZ6mN6Q1Dr5MUTGTj2rkqTw6SaiPL77J4tyzr3xvaXlMmyLqSqcVoIaFJhf7QRdZYUTVSW6MBvZ4btGRGInomMPnr9pLldV2r32uVR5aMfyKrIEuNYxdqe9/s320/DogCU.gif" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLHpetEY5xE-4RzbOcjr59HvgM_3k_zK3Yo_cyd5XLBzKXFFDRDxW2rsuV7zAs8OXvVMPRqWmnlGIu1xUge7_Yjras0L1v8Hy_J9VhPYHRybQ_pHaXlehv2YoDmwkuLs4-l5TfIGK6W5sX/s1600-h/LostPig.gif"><img style="WIDTH: 248px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313110624641807122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLHpetEY5xE-4RzbOcjr59HvgM_3k_zK3Yo_cyd5XLBzKXFFDRDxW2rsuV7zAs8OXvVMPRqWmnlGIu1xUge7_Yjras0L1v8Hy_J9VhPYHRybQ_pHaXlehv2YoDmwkuLs4-l5TfIGK6W5sX/s320/LostPig.gif" /></a><br /><br />Watercolour and prisma colour pencil on paperStephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15161315003876667330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2655417940610383407.post-21418194178399636622009-03-13T17:46:00.000-07:002009-03-15T14:59:19.321-07:00Flash Animation-30 second commercial for GM<p><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxdowyzfTMbRddTfBIWBztyD5entJgF6AMqsB1BWLeRPiM1bmV3cC9cUBq6KWc2ig-leSo5rpymVWX06QdnPg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;">Acme Filmworks 2008</span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;">Directed by Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis</span></p><p>This was an intense job!
